Born to Lead has been around for over 20 years. We have been raising Guide Dog Puppies in the Davis County, as well as the Weber County area for Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB) based out of San Rafael, California.
As puppy raisers, we are responsible to teach each puppy basic commands, appropriate house manners, and to socialize them using GDB approved techniques and training guidelines.
The raisers are all volunteer status and provide a loving home and training for their future. Raisers keep each puppy from the time the puppy is 8 weeks old until they are about 15 months old. This stage in a puppy's life is so important to the future goal of becoming a Guide Dog. Each puppy raiser attends 3-6 months worth of Guide Dog meetings, consisting of training and socializations to learn how to raise these special puppies before getting one. We always make sure to stress that raising a Guide Dog puppy takes time and dedication. We welcome youth raisers (over the age of 9) but raising a Guide Dog Puppy requires the whole family's support and help.
